Insider Tales from a Wedding DJ in New Bern, North Carolina
Tips on keeping your NC wedding Venue dance floor packed.
Every couple wants the same thing at the end of the night — a full dance floor and guests who don’t want to leave.
But what actually makes that happen?
Is it the playlist? The personality? The lighting? A perfectly timed Disco moment?
We sat down with local wedding DJ and entertainment professional John May, owner of Amayzing Entertainment, to talk about what really keeps a reception "Staying Alive" — from the first dance to the final song of the night.
His name (John) and his love for the beat may as well be wrapped in a white leisure suit straight out of your Favorite movie where you are the MAIN CHARACTER! Theres a Good chance there will be footage of your "MOVES" on the dance floor if DJ John is in the booth!
If you're planning a wedding in New Bern, North Carolina, DJ John May gives us the insider perspective you didn’t know you needed.

Q:Let’s Start with the Big One — What Really Keeps a Dance Floor Packed?
Playlist? Personality? Lighting? A perfectly timed "Disco" moment?
DJ John May:“Well… what you asked earlier is honestly the answer to this question.
Is it the playlist? The personality? The lighting? A perfectly timed ‘September’ moment?
YES!
It’s the playlist, the personality, the lighting — and knowing when to play the right songs. Being able to read the room is key. At a wedding, we’re playing for guests from age 5 to 75. The playlist usually includes songs most people know, and a skilled DJ mixes them in a way that keeps the energy flowing.
We’ve also got a few remixes and tricks up our sleeves that can make almost any song danceable. I like to throw in a few surprises now and then.
And here’s something important — people follow the bride. If the bride is on the dance floor, everyone else will follow.”
💡 Magnolia Manor Note: Brides, take this as your official permission slip to dance all night.
Q: How Important Are Must-Play and Do-Not-Play Lists?
DJ John May:“We want your wedding to reflect you. If there are songs you absolutely want to hear, tell us! Even if it’s not a big dance track, we can work it into cocktail hour or dinner.
And if there’s a song that brings back a bad memory — definitely let us know. Your wedding day should be full of good vibes only.
One quick note about ‘no line dances.’ I understand not loving them — I’m not a huge fan either. But sometimes those songs are the only time Aunt Linda or Uncle Bob will hit the dance floor, and the crowd usually loves it.
My suggestion? Let the DJ play them only if guests request them. The dance floor runs on momentum.”
💡 Magnolia Manor Note: Play what makes you happy on this special day! Anything to see your Grandparents getting Jiggy with it, is Priceless!
Q: What’s the Most Underestimated Moment of the Night?
DJ John May:“Timing.
A great DJ knows when to kick the party up — right at that sweet spot after dinner.
Also, don’t let your photographer keep you away from the reception too long. Your guests came to celebrate with you!
And don’t underestimate traditional moments:
The grand entrance
Parent dances
Cake cutting
Bouquet and garter toss
They can be incredibly fun — and the older generation is often expecting those moments.”
At Magnolia Manor 1843, we’ve seen firsthand how these classic traditions bring generations together on the dance floor.
💡 Magnolia Manor Note: We couldn't agree more! Getting your friends and family on the dance, makes for a EPIC wedding experience!
Q: What’s the Biggest Mistake Couples Make When Booking a DJ?
DJ John May:“Probably hiring someone who doesn’t match their vibe.
But experience matters just as much. A seasoned DJ works with the planner, photographer, venue, and catering team to keep everything running smoothly.
Building energy on the dance floor takes experience — and when you hire someone who knows what they’re doing, bringing the vibe to your wedding becomes effortless.”
💡Magnolia Manor Note: Vibes Matter! Your guests will "Match the Vibes" you offer them. Look for that addded extra spice like DJ John May and his team have! You wont regret the time you spend on the dance floor!
