Historic Garden Wedding Venues in New Bern, NC: Collaboration Over Competition wedding venues in New Bern North Carolina

In a small community like ours in Eastern North Carolina, it’s only natural for comparisons to happen — especially when two garden venues share the same market. But at Magnolia Manor 1843, we believe friendly competition doesn’t divide businesses — it elevates them. Today, we’re honored to sit down with Rachel, a fellow venue owner in the historic downtown New Bern, North Carolina, the visionary behind Isaac Taylor Gardens, and the creative force of floral design at Tildy. We talked about her journey, her perspective on weddings, and why collaboration always comes first.

Rising Together: Celebrating Community and Collaboration

Its accessibility also makes planning easy for traveling guests—New Bern is just a short drive from Raleigh, and the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport is less than ten minutes from downtown, making arrival simple and convenient.

Not every couple is the perfect fit for every venue, and sometimes dates fill quickly. When that happens, we’re always happy to refer couples to the many talented venues and vendors that help make New Bern such a special place to get married. Supporting one another strengthens our community and ensures that every couple can find the setting that feels just right for them.

Today, we’re excited to spotlight one of our fellow downtown New Bern venues—a beautiful space that also features an on-site floral business, bringing together venue and floral design in one creative location.

We’re especially delighted to have connected with Rachel and are grateful for the time she shared with us during this interview. Conversations like these help highlight the incredible talent and passion within New Bern’s wedding community.

We look forward to future collaborations and to continuing to celebrate weddings—and the wonderful people who make them possible—right here in New Bern.

The Heart Behind the Garden and the Blooms

Q: As a small business owner, what inspired you to create both Isaac Taylor Garden and Tildy Floral Design? How did your personal vision and passion for design shape the evolution of these ventures into the beautiful and meaningful experiences they provide today?
Rachel:

I began my journey in the wedding industry more than 30 years ago at a small church in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. As the years passed and my experience deepened, my aspirations gradually evolved, ultimately leading me toward the dream of owning a venue of my own.

Q: How did you first discover your passion for floral design, and how did that passion ultimately blossom into the creation of Tildy Floral Design?
Rachel:

I hold a degree in Interior Design, but like many after college, I felt drawn to explore a different path. After becoming a member of a local church, I eventually stepped into the role of Wedding Coordinator. Over time, couples began asking if I would also design the florals for their events. Wanting to learn the craft properly, I reached out to a floral designer I knew and offered my time as “free labor” in exchange for her mentorship. Through that experience, I discovered a true love for floral design—and I have been passionate about it ever since.

Q: What has been the most surprising—or perhaps the most rewarding—aspect of owning and operating both a wedding venue and a floral design business?
Rachel:

Having the honor of playing a small role in the beginning of a couple’s married life together.

Q: As a woman in this industry, what lessons have you learned about leadership and building a creative business?
Rachel:

Ohhhh that could be a whole additional blog 😊  As a woman, in the South I have come across certain instances where I have been challenged due to not having a male counterpart or partner in business.  At times in the past this challenge has presented with men only wanting to do business with other men.  I have never let that stop me, I just ending up doing business with other men!

For Couples: The Experience We Create

Q: When couples are shopping for venues, what’s one thing you wish they understood about the process?
Rachel:
It can be intimate and be special, People that you are acquaintances with might get feeling hurt that they were not invited if you wish to have a more intimate celebration, however you can always grab drinks or dinner at a latter date to celebrate.

Q: What do you consider the most important questions couples should ask when choosing a venue or florist?
Rachel:

Venue ~ How does the venue fit our needs.

Florist ~ What is your style or aesthetic, you want the very best of what they have to offer not just putting them into a different mold.

Q: How do you approach creating a wedding experience that feels personal, unique, and effortless for couples?
Rachel:

I treat people how I would like to be treated.

Industry & Collaboration Perspective

Q: Have there been moments where working alongside “competitors” actually helped you elevate your own business?
Rachel:

Yes we can all benefit from one another knowledge.

Q: What advice would you give to other creative business owners looking to balance competition with collaboration?
Rachel: Don’t be afraid to just ask.  Tell them from the start, if I am asking something off base or that you don’t want to share it is fine to tell me that.
